This heritage listed iconic church in the heart of Fremantle’s civic centre, Walyalup Koort (Kings Square), has been a prominent part of the City Centre for many years, as both an important architectural landmark and a centrally located civic asset. It has been a focus for community-based activity since its construction in 1882.
The gothic revival building has remained largely untouched since then, with the most significant exception being the addition of the Priest's Vestry & Choir Vestry in 1922. The roof has been the subject of re-cladding in both 1914 (original shingle roof was replaced with slate), and in 1976 when the slate was replaced with fibrous cement shingles.
After providing a comprehensive building heritage assessment, we focused on the important task of stabilising structural cracking in the Priest’s Vestry, the removal of invasive internal elements, and transformed the Vestry space to include new toilets for the building. With the addition of upgrades to the external stormwater management system, we then applied for state heritage grant funding and our successful application then kick-started the project, in 2019.
This important structural remediation, refurbishment and restoration project has ensured the church remains in viable operation as a place of worship, community focal point and civic asset for many years to come.
