Originally built in 1935 using innovative formed concrete construction for its time, this heritage listed “Inter-War Romanesque” style building had remained relatively untouched and unmaintained since its construction, falling into a relatively poor condition as a result. It’s original prominence at the crest of a ridge had been diminished over the years through poorly maintained grounds and facilities. Our guiding principle in the design was to respect and value the original built fabric, whilst sensitively restoring and adapting the spaces to accommodate contemporary liturgical practice. Lowering the floor internally to all one level and replacing pews with stackable seating provides for a flexible worship space.New office and toilet facilities at the rear, multi-purpose room and “Lady Chapel” provide amenity that ensures the building remains flexible and adaptable.A completely re-designed entrance forecourt with new sculptural cross element provides an inviting open space immediately in front of the church entrance, accommodating communal gathering and celebratory space. Significant earthworks and sensitive retention of key features such as the mature Jacaranda tree, needed to be woven in to the retaining walls stairs, and ramps, providing an attractive entrance to the facility along with a functional spill out space for the church. Project value $1.5M Completed October 2017.
